Midwife and ultrasound
Ultrasound examinations throughout pregnancy, performed by a midwife with further qualification in ultrasound diagnostics.
Weeks 6–11: an early scan is mainly used to confirm the pregnancy. From week 6–7 we can see whether the heart is beating, whether there is more than one baby, and how far along the pregnancy is. We recommend waiting until 6 completed weeks. Early scans are performed vaginally.
Weeks 11–14: we carry out an anatomical review of the foetus, take measurements to establish its age, and give you a provisional due date. If we suspect an abnormality we refer you to the hospital for further assessment.
Weeks 14–40: from week 15–16 we can usually see the sex and more of the anatomy. From week 26 until birth we assess growth and wellbeing, the placenta, and the volume of amniotic fluid.
Referral and a place to give birth
If you do not have a regular GP, we can refer you to the publicly funded scans in weeks 11–13+6 and 18–19. We can also apply for a maternity place on your behalf.
